Kalaupapa Airport
Remote gateway to Molokai's historic Kalaupapa peninsula.
- ›Kalaupapa peninsula is surrounded on three sides by ocean and on the fourth by some of the world's tallest sea cliffs, making air access critical.
- ›The area served by the airport is a National Historical Park designated in honor of Hansen's disease patients who were exiled there beginning in 1866.
- ›Access to Kalaupapa is restricted by the National Park Service; visitors must have a permit and be accompanied by authorized guides.
- ›The runway is short and suited only for small propeller-driven commuter aircraft.
- ›A handful of Hansen's disease survivors formerly resided in the settlement, which is preserved as a living memorial.
Kalaupapa Airport serves the isolated Kalaupapa National Historical Park on the northern coast of Molokai, Hawaii, accessible only by air, mule trail, or sea. Once the site of a leprosy settlement established in 1866, the peninsula remains a deeply significant and protected place, home to a small population of former patients and administered by the National Park Service. The airport functions as the primary lifeline for residents and permitted visitors to this remarkably remote community.
- Main Terminal — A small, single-room facility serving light aircraft and limited scheduled prop-plane service to and from Molokai and Honolulu.
- Guided tour vehicles arranged by Damien Tours (required for most visitors)
- Walking within the settlement area
- Mule ride descent from Molokai topside (pre-arranged only)
There are no restaurants or food outlets at or near Kalaupapa Airport. Visitors on guided tours may be offered limited refreshments as part of their tour package. It is strongly advised to bring your own food and water, as supplies on the peninsula are extremely limited.
- Entry to Kalaupapa is strictly controlled — a permit from the National Park Service or an authorized tour operator is required before arrival.
- Children under 16 are not permitted to visit the settlement area.
- Flights are operated by small propeller aircraft; baggage and weight limits are strictly enforced.
- Respect the solemnity of the site — Kalaupapa is both a living community and a place of great historical suffering.
