Udon Thani, Thailand
Udon Thani International Airport (IATA: UTH, ICAO: VTUD) serves the city of Udon Thani in northeastern Thailand's Isan region. It is one of the busiest airports in the region, handling both domestic and international flights, and is operated by Airports of Thailand (AOT). The airport plays a significant role in connecting Udon Thani — a major commercial and tourism hub near the Laos border — with Bangkok and other Thai cities. It also sees international traffic, particularly from regional destinations in Southeast Asia. Udon Thani is historically notable for its use as a major U.S. Air Force base during the Vietnam War era, and the airport's infrastructure reflects that legacy. Today it supports a growing passenger base driven by tourism, trade, and the large expat community in the region.

Gateway to Thailand's vibrant northeast, where history meets modernity

Udon Thani International Airport (UTH) serves as the primary air gateway to Thailand's upper northeastern Isan region, a city with deep roots in both ancient Ban Chiang culture and the American military presence during the Vietnam War era. The airport handles a mix of domestic Thai routes and select international connections, particularly to regional hubs in Southeast Asia. It plays a vital role in linking the agriculturally rich and culturally distinct Isan heartland to the rest of the country and beyond.

Dining

Inside the terminal, passengers will find a modest selection of Thai quick-service restaurants, coffee outlets, and convenience stores suitable for light meals before departure. The city of Udon Thani itself, just a short ride away, is renowned for its Isan cuisine including grilled meats, som tam, and the local specialty Gai Yang Udon. Night markets such as the UD Town outdoor market offer an excellent spread of street food for those with time before their flight.

Traveller Tips
  • Arrange your taxi or transfer in advance during peak holiday periods as demand at the rank can exceed supply.
  • The currency exchange counters inside the terminal offer reasonable rates, but city banks and authorised booths typically offer better deals.
  • Udon Thani's city centre is only about 4–6 kilometres from the airport, so even tuk-tuk rides are affordable and practical.
  • Check whether your international flight requires a separate domestic connection via Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airports, as direct international routes from UTH are limited.
