EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg is a unique international airport situated on French territory near the Swiss city of Basel and the German city of Freiburg. It is the only airport in the world jointly operated by two sovereign nations—France and Switzerland—under a 1949 bilateral treaty, giving it separate French and Swiss customs and border-control zones. The airport serves as a significant gateway for the Upper Rhine region, handling over 8 million passengers annually before the COVID-19 pandemic. It operates under dual IATA codes, with BSL used for the Swiss sector and MLH for the French sector, though both refer to the same physical airport. Located approximately 4 km from Saint-Louis, France, and about 7 km from central Basel, Switzerland, the airport benefits from its tripoint geographic position and hosts a wide range of European carriers, including a significant easyJet base.
Terminals
The airport has a single main passenger terminal building with separate Swiss and French customs zones, connected by a shared airside area.
Getting to & from
The airport is connected to Basel by bus (line 50), and a cross-border tram extension (Tram 8) links it to Basel city centre; road access via French and Swiss motorways is also available.
