Overview
Dongyang is a county-level city administered by Jinhua, located in central Zhejiang Province. It sits in a basin surrounded by low hills and is crossed by the Dongyang River. The city has a population of roughly 800,000 and blends an industrial economy with genuine cultural heritage.
Dongyang is most internationally recognised as the home of Hengdian World Studios, a vast film production complex that doubles as a tourist attraction. Millions of visitors come to walk through the full-scale historical sets and occasionally catch live-action filming in progress. Beyond Hengdian, Dongyang has a centuries-old reputation for two traditional crafts: Dongyang woodcarving (a national intangible cultural heritage) and Dongyang bamboo weaving.
The city has a functional, working character rather than a polished tourist sheen. Visitors willing to look beyond the studios will find craft workshops, riverside walks, and a glimpse into Zhejiang's manufacturing heartland.
Before You Go
Visas
China has specific visa requirements that vary by nationality and may change. Do not rely on this guide for visa decisions. Check TravelerPulse's Visas section and the official website of the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country, as well as the National Immigration Administration of China.
Health
No specific vaccinations are required beyond standard travel health precautions. Tap water is generally not considered safe to drink in Zhejiang; bottled water is widely and cheaply available. If you take prescription medication, bring sufficient supply, as finding exact foreign equivalents can be difficult.
Connectivity
China's internet is subject to the Great Firewall. Many commonly used apps and websites (Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.) are inaccessible without a VPN. Research and download a VPN before you arrive; verify it is working in your home country first. WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate payment; international visitors can now link foreign bank cards to Alipay — verify current procedures before travel. Cash (RMB) remains a reliable backup.
Weather
Dongyang has a humid subtropical climate. Summers (June–August) are hot and humid, with temperatures regularly above 35 °C. Winters are cool and damp, with temperatures sometimes dropping near 0 °C. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for outdoor sightseeing.
Getting There
By Air
Dongyang has no commercial airport. The most practical international gateway is Yiwu Airport (YIW), roughly 30 km northwest, which operates domestic routes. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH), about 130 km north, handles most international flights to the region and is better connected. Ningbo Lishe International Airport (NGB) is another option to the east.
By High-Speed Rail
Dongyang is served by Dongyang North Station on the Hangzhou–Wenzhou high-speed rail line. High-speed services connect to Hangzhou, Yiwu, and other Zhejiang cities. Journey time to Hangzhou is typically under one hour. Check the 12306.cn platform or an authorised agent for current schedules and to purchase tickets.
By Bus
Long-distance buses connect Dongyang to Yiwu, Jinhua, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Shanghai. The main Dongyang bus station handles intercity routes. Buses are generally affordable and reliable for regional travel.
From Hengdian
Hengdian town, home to the studios, is about 20 km from Dongyang city centre. Local buses, taxis, and ride-hailing apps (Didi) link the two. Visitors focusing on Hengdian may find it more practical to base themselves there directly.
Getting Around
Dongyang city itself is compact enough that taxis and Didi ride-hailing are the most practical options for most visitors. Local buses run throughout the city and to Hengdian, but route information in English is limited — consider using a translation app or asking hotel staff.
Electric scooters and bicycles are common among locals. Renting one may be possible but typically requires a Chinese ID or resident status.
Within Hengdian World Studios, the complex is large; internal shuttle buses and golf carts operate between zones. Verify transport options at the entrance on the day of your visit.
Things to See & Do
Hengdian World Studios
The studios comprise multiple themed zones: full-scale reconstructions of the Forbidden City, ancient palace complexes, Republican-era street sets, and more. You may see cast and crew filming period dramas — China's prolific television and film industry uses these sets constantly. The attraction operates as a ticketed theme park. Verify current admission prices, opening hours, and any zone-specific access requirements directly with the official Hengdian Film and Television City website or at the gate.
Dongyang Woodcarving
Dongyang is one of the most celebrated centres of Chinese woodcarving. Look for workshops and galleries in and around the city where artisans produce intricate relief carvings in camphor wood and other timbers. The Dongyang Woodcarving Museum is a reasonable starting point to understand the craft's history and regional styles.
Bamboo Weaving
Dongyang bamboo weaving (also called Dongyang bamboo art) is a fine-craft tradition distinct from utilitarian basket making. Craft shops and occasional market stalls stock examples ranging from decorative panels to functional items. It makes a practical, lightweight souvenir.
Greenery and River Walks
The Dongyang River and surrounding low hills offer casual walking. The landscape is pleasant without being dramatic — suitable for an easy half-day on foot or by bike if you have extra time.
Day Trips
Yiwu, 30 km away, is one of the world's largest commodity wholesale markets and is worth a visit for its sheer scale if you have commercial or shopping interests. Jinhua city, the administrative parent, has its own heritage sites including Yanlong Cave.
Food & Drink
Dongyang's cuisine sits within the broader Zhejiang (Zhe) culinary tradition, which favours fresh ingredients, subtle seasoning, and moderate use of oil compared to some other Chinese regional styles. Pork, freshwater fish, tofu, and seasonal vegetables are staples.
Dongyang local specialties worth seeking out include:
- Dongyang lamb soup (东阳羊肉汤) — a warming, milky broth especially popular in cooler months
- Smoked and cured meats — small shops sell locally prepared cured pork and sausages
- Rice-based dishes — Zhejiang's rice agriculture shows in local breakfasts and side dishes
- Tofu preparations — multiple local styles of braised and fermented tofu
Street food stalls and small noodle shops near markets and bus stations are often the most authentic and affordable eating options. In Hengdian, restaurants catering to tourists are plentiful but may be priced higher than local eateries in the city proper.
Alcohol is readily available; Chinese baijiu, beer, and huangjiu (Shaoxing-style rice wine from nearby Shaoxing) are common. Tap water is not safe to drink; tea is served widely and is the practical default.
Shopping
Woodcarving and bamboo weaving products are the most distinctive purchases in Dongyang. Quality ranges from mass-produced tourist pieces to fine handmade work — if authenticity and craftsmanship matter, ask to visit a workshop and speak with the artisan.
Hengdian has numerous souvenir shops selling film-themed merchandise, replica costumes, and props. These are fun but not unique to the region.
For everyday goods, local markets and small supermarkets are practical. Yiwu, a short trip away, is an enormous wholesale market if you are interested in bulk purchasing of consumer goods — it is primarily a B2B market but individual visitors can browse.
Practical Information
Emergency Numbers
Verify current local emergency numbers before travel. In China, commonly cited numbers include 110 (police), 120 (ambulance), and 119 (fire). Confirm these apply locally and are current.
Language
English is not widely spoken in Dongyang outside of some hotel reception desks in Hengdian. A translation app (Google Translate offline, or a Chinese alternative such as Baidu Translate) with a downloaded Chinese language pack is strongly recommended. Learning a few basic phrases in Mandarin is appreciated.
Payments
WeChat Pay and Alipay are the dominant payment methods. Foreign visitors can link international Visa or Mastercard to Alipay — check current procedures, as policies have evolved. ATMs accepting foreign cards exist but are not always reliable outside city centres; confirm with your bank before travel.
Pharmacies
Chain pharmacies (such as Guoda and Yifeng) are present in Dongyang. Staff will not typically speak English. Bring sufficient prescription medication. For common OTC items, a translation app and pointing at symptoms or packaging can work.
Accommodation
Hengdian has a range of hotels and guesthouses developed around the studios. Dongyang city centre has budget and mid-range options. Verify current listings and prices on a booking platform (Ctrip/Trip.com is practical in China).
Safety
Dongyang and Hengdian are generally safe for visitors. Petty crime is low by comparison with many large cities. Standard travel precautions apply: keep valuables secure in crowded areas such as bus stations and tourist sites.
Be aware that Hengdian's studios are large and can be exhausting on a hot day; carry water and sunscreen during summer visits. Traffic in Chinese cities can be busy and fast-moving — exercise caution at pedestrian crossings even when signals indicate it is safe to walk.
For any medical emergency, go to the nearest public hospital (公立医院). Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended for all visitors to China.
Local Culture & Etiquette
Dongyang sits within Zhejiang's broader cultural sphere, shaped by centuries of silk and craft trade, Confucian educational values, and merchant culture. The city has produced notable scholars and craftspeople historically.
When visiting workshops or private craft studios, ask permission before photographing artisans at work. At active film sets in Hengdian, photography rules vary by zone and may change on any given day depending on production — follow posted signs and staff instructions.
Festivals follow the Chinese lunar calendar. The Lunar New Year period (typically January–February) sees significant travel and many local businesses closed or reduced; visiting around this time requires careful planning. The National Golden Week holiday (first week of October) brings large domestic tourism volumes to Hengdian — expect crowds and higher accommodation prices.
