Overview
Thandwe is a small coastal town in Rakhine State, located on the eastern shore of the Bay of Bengal in western Myanmar. It serves as the gateway to Ngapali Beach, one of the country's most well-known seaside destinations, situated a few kilometres from the town centre.
The town itself is a working community with local markets, fishing activity, and a slower pace of life that contrasts with the resort strip to the south. Thandwe District has a predominantly Rakhine Buddhist population, and the area retains a character that is noticeably different from Myanmar's larger cities.
Travellers should be aware that Myanmar as a whole has experienced significant political instability since the military takeover in February 2021. Conditions on the ground — including travel access, safety, and infrastructure — can change rapidly. Visitors are strongly encouraged to consult their government's current travel advisory before planning any trip to Myanmar, including Rakhine State.
Before You Go
Travel Advisories
As of the time of writing, many governments maintain elevated travel advisories for Myanmar following the 2021 military coup. Rakhine State has historically also been subject to its own regional advisories due to longstanding ethnic conflict in parts of the state. Check the latest guidance from your national foreign ministry before booking anything.
Visas
Myanmar's visa and entry requirements have undergone several changes in recent years. For current, accurate requirements, visit TravelerPulse's Visas section and cross-reference with Myanmar's official immigration authority or your nearest Myanmar embassy.
Health
Consult a travel medicine clinic well before departure. Malaria prophylaxis may be advisable depending on your itinerary and health profile — verify with a medical professional. Ensure routine vaccinations are up to date. Travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended given the limited medical facilities in Thandwe.
Cash
Access to ATMs and international banking has been unreliable in Myanmar since 2021. Carry sufficient local and USD cash. Conditions change; verify the current situation through traveller forums or recent news before departure.
Getting There
By Air
Thandwe Airport (SNW) is the main point of entry for most international and domestic travellers. Domestic flights connecting Thandwe to Yangon have historically been operated by Myanmar's domestic carriers, though airline schedules and operators change frequently. Verify current routes and availability directly with airlines or local travel agents.
By Road or Sea
Overland and sea routes to Thandwe exist but are significantly longer and more demanding than flying. Road conditions in Rakhine State can be poor, particularly during and after the monsoon season. These routes are not commonly used by independent travellers and should be researched thoroughly before attempting.
Getting Around
Within Thandwe town and between the town and Ngapali Beach, motorcycle taxis (known locally as motorbike taxis) are a common and inexpensive way to get around. Bicycle rental has historically been available near the Ngapali resort area and is a practical option for exploring the beach road at a relaxed pace.
Taxis can be arranged through hotels and guesthouses for longer trips or airport transfers. Confirm fares before setting off, as there are no standard metered taxis in this area. Walking is feasible within Ngapali's beach zone itself.
Things to See & Do
Ngapali Beach
The primary draw for visitors is Ngapali Beach, a stretch of white sand backed by palm trees and the Bay of Bengal. The beach is relatively quiet compared to Southeast Asian resort towns, and the water is generally calm during the dry season, making it suitable for swimming.
Fishing Village Visits
Small fishing communities sit at the northern end of the beach area. Visiting in the early morning, when boats return with the night's catch, gives a genuine sense of local working life. Be respectful and unobtrusive, particularly when photographing people.
Snorkelling and Boat Trips
Snorkelling excursions and boat trips to nearby islands can be arranged through local operators during the dry season. Quality and safety standards vary; inspect equipment carefully and ask about the operator's experience before booking.
Thandwe Town
Thandwe's central market offers a look at daily commerce away from the tourist zone. Several pagodas in and around town are worth a respectful visit. The Andaw, Nandaw, and Sandaw pagodas are among the historically noted religious sites in the district — verify access locally.
Food & Drink
Seafood is the local highlight. Fresh fish, prawns, and crab are caught daily by local fishermen and appear on menus throughout the Ngapali area. Grilled fish with rice is a simple and reliable meal available at modest local restaurants near the beach.
Rakhine cuisine has its own character within Myanmar's culinary landscape, featuring rice-based dishes, fish paste, and preparations that are somewhat spicier than typical Burmese food. Look for small local teashops in Thandwe town for affordable, authentic meals.
Tourist-oriented restaurants along the beach serve a mix of Burmese, seafood-focused, and broadly international dishes. Alcohol is available in these establishments. Prices in tourist restaurants are higher than in town — carry cash, as card payment is not reliably accepted anywhere.
Practical Information
Connectivity
Mobile internet via local SIM cards has been widely available in Myanmar in recent years, though network reliability in Rakhine State can be inconsistent. Internet freedom is restricted in Myanmar; be aware of this before relying on connectivity.
Electricity
Myanmar uses 230V/50Hz. Plug types in use include Type C, Type D, and Type G. Power outages can occur; resorts sometimes have backup generators.
Emergency Contacts
Local emergency numbers and the nearest reliable medical facility should be confirmed on arrival. Serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to Yangon. Ensure your travel insurance explicitly covers medical evacuation.
Responsible Travel
Myanmar's current political situation raises complex questions about tourism and where spending goes. Research this issue through current journalism and make an informed decision about where you eat, stay, and spend money.
Safety
Ngapali and Thandwe town have not historically been flashpoints for the violence that has affected other parts of Rakhine State, but travellers should not treat the region as entirely separate from the broader instability in Myanmar. The situation in Rakhine State involves ongoing ethnic conflict in the northern and central parts of the state, well away from Thandwe, but conditions can shift.
Petty crime is not widely reported as a major issue in Ngapali, but standard precautions apply: secure valuables, be aware of surroundings, and avoid displaying expensive items. Swimming safety is worth taking seriously — currents and conditions vary and there are no lifeguards on the beach.
Always register your presence with your country's embassy or consular service before travelling to Myanmar, and monitor travel advisories throughout your stay.
Local Culture & Etiquette
Thandwe and the surrounding area are predominantly Rakhine Buddhist. Modest dress is expected when visiting pagodas and religious sites — cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering temple grounds. This is a straightforward expectation rather than an optional courtesy.
The local population is generally accustomed to visitors in the Ngapali area, but the Burmese concept of not causing embarrassment or loss of face applies. Loud, confrontational, or dismissive behaviour is poorly received. Bargaining is practised in markets but should be friendly and good-humoured rather than aggressive.
Photographing people, particularly in fishing villages, should be done with permission where possible. Military installations and personnel should never be photographed — this is both a legal and a serious safety consideration in the current political environment.
