Overview
Disneyland Resort is a self-contained entertainment complex in Anaheim, Orange County, California, roughly 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. It encompasses two theme parks — Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park — along with the Downtown Disney retail and dining district and several on-site hotels.
Disneyland Park, which opened in 1955, is the original Disney park and carries considerable cultural weight for fans of theme park history. Disney California Adventure, which opened in 2001 and has undergone significant expansion since, focuses on California themes and Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars intellectual properties. Together the two parks offer a full range of rides, live entertainment, character experiences, and seasonal events.
The resort sits within a walkable footprint. The two parks share a main entrance plaza on Harbor Boulevard, and on-site hotels are a short walk or free shuttle ride from the gates. Anaheim itself is a mid-sized Southern California city with a full range of accommodation and dining options extending well beyond the resort boundaries.
Before You Go
Tickets and Reservations
Disneyland uses a date-based, tiered ticketing system. Prices vary significantly by date and ticket type. Purchase tickets directly through the official Disneyland website or the Disneyland mobile app well in advance, especially for holiday periods and summer. Third-party resellers exist but carry risk; verify legitimacy before buying.
A park reservation is currently required in addition to a valid ticket. The reservation system links to your ticket and is managed through your Disney account online. Verify current reservation requirements on the official site before your visit, as policies can change.
Lightning Lane, Disney's paid queue-skip service, is available as an add-on. There are two tiers — Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass for the most in-demand attractions. Whether these are worth the additional cost depends on your budget, group size, and which rides are priorities. Check current pricing on the official site.
Planning Essentials
- Download the official Disneyland app before arrival; it shows live wait times, maps, dining reservations, and Lightning Lane booking
- Mobile food ordering is available at many quick-service locations and saves time
- Table-service dining reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance through the app or website
- Strollers are permitted and available for rental inside the parks; verify current sizes and policies on the official site
Visas
For entry requirements to the United States, check TravelerPulse's Visas section and consult the U.S. Customs and Border Protection or State Department official websites for guidance relevant to your nationality.
Getting There
By Air
The most convenient airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana, approximately 15 miles from the resort. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is larger, with more international connections, but is roughly 35 miles away and subject to significant traffic delays. Long Beach Airport (LGB) is a smaller option also within reasonable distance.
By Car
The resort is directly accessible via Interstate 5 (the Santa Ana Freeway). Exits for Disneyland are well signed. The resort operates its own multi-story parking structures; fees apply and are charged per entry. Verify current rates on the official site. Rideshare drop-off and pick-up zones are designated near the main entrance.
By Bus and Train
Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner service stops at Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC), approximately 2 miles from the resort. Local bus services connect ARTIC to the resort area. From Los Angeles Union Station, the Metrolink commuter rail also serves Anaheim. Verify current schedules and connections through the relevant transit operator websites.
Shuttle Services
Many nearby hotels offer complimentary or paid shuttles to the resort entrance. Confirm availability when booking accommodation.
Getting Around
Both theme parks and the Downtown Disney district are navigable entirely on foot. The resort's compact layout means most guests walk between all major areas without difficulty.
The Mickey and Friends parking structure and the Pixar Pals parking structure are connected to the main entrance via a free tram service that runs continuously during operating hours. If you park at an on-site hotel, the resort is typically walkable.
Within Disneyland Park, the Disneyland Railroad circles the perimeter with multiple stops, and the Monorail connects Tomorrowland to Downtown Disney — though the Monorail's operational status and route can change; verify on the day of your visit via the app.
Between the two parks, guests with a Park Hopper ticket can walk freely through the shared entrance plaza. No additional transit is required.
Where to Stay
On-Site Hotels
The resort operates three official Disney hotels: Disneyland Hotel, Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel (currently operating under that name — verify current branding on the official site as a rebranding project has been underway). Staying on-site provides benefits including early theme park entry on select days and convenient walkable access. Rates are premium; book directly through Disney or a trusted travel agent.
Off-Site Options
Harbor Boulevard and the surrounding streets in Anaheim host a large concentration of independently owned and chain hotels at varying price points. Many offer shuttle service to the resort. The area is well-served for budget-conscious travelers, though accommodations range widely in quality — read recent reviews carefully.
Tips
- On-site hotel guests should verify current early-entry benefits when booking, as policies change
- Anaheim Convention Center is adjacent to the resort; convention dates can cause significant spikes in hotel rates and local traffic
- Book accommodation well in advance for summer, major holidays, and Halloween/Christmas event periods
Things to See & Do
Disneyland Park
The original park is organized into themed lands: Main Street U.S.A., Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and Mickey's Toontown (which underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2023). Signature attractions include Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, and Rise of the Resistance in Galaxy's Edge. Wait times for top-tier rides can exceed 90 minutes on busy days; early arrival and strategic use of Lightning Lane can reduce this.
Disney California Adventure Park
Highlights include Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land (consistently one of the most popular attractions at the resort), Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure, Incredicoaster, and Soarin' Around the World. The park hosts World of Color, a nighttime water and projection show, most evenings — check the current schedule.
Seasonal Events
The resort runs major seasonal overlays including Halloween Time (typically September–October) and the holiday season (November–January). These events can significantly increase crowd levels but offer unique entertainment and décor.
Entertainment and Shows
Both parks offer parades, character meet-and-greets, and live stage shows. Fireworks displays take place at Disneyland Park on most evenings during peak seasons. Check the current schedule via the app, as entertainment lineups rotate and are subject to change.
Food & Drink
Dining Inside the Parks
Both parks offer a wide range of quick-service and table-service options. Blue Bayou Restaurant, located inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride building at Disneyland Park, is one of the most atmospheric dining experiences on property and books up quickly — reservations are strongly recommended. Oga's Cantina in Galaxy's Edge serves themed beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) in a heavily themed environment; reservations are advisable.
Quick-service options are numerous and span burgers, pizza, sandwiches, Asian-inspired dishes, and more. Mobile ordering through the app is the most efficient way to handle quick-service meals on busy days.
Special Dietary Needs
Disney has a long-standing reputation for accommodating common dietary restrictions including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan needs. Guests with serious allergies can speak to a chef at most table-service locations. Verify options in advance via the app or by calling the resort's dining line.
Downtown Disney and Hotels
The Downtown Disney district outside the park gates has additional restaurants and cafes accessible without a park ticket, including options that tend to attract locals as well as guests. On-site hotel restaurants are open to all guests.
Alcohol
Alcohol is available at both parks. Disneyland Park sells alcohol at most table-service locations and several specialty venues, a change from its decades-long policy of being alcohol-free outside of Club 33.
Practical Information
Hours and Crowd Levels
Park hours vary by day and season. The resort publishes a calendar on its official website; hours during peak seasons are typically longer than on off-peak weekdays. Arriving at or before park opening is one of the most effective strategies for managing wait times.
Accessibility
Disneyland Resort has extensive accessibility provisions, including wheelchair and ECV rentals, companion restrooms, and attraction-specific accommodations. The Disability Access Service (DAS) is available for guests who cannot wait in a conventional queue due to a disability. Enroll in DAS in advance through the official website or on arrival at Guest Relations.
Lockers and Bag Check
Locker rentals are available near the main entrance. All bags are subject to security screening before entering the parks.
Lost and Found
Report lost items at Guest Relations inside the parks or contact the resort's official lost-and-found service. Check the official site for current contact details.
Money and Payments
Major credit and debit cards are accepted throughout the resort. Mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.) are widely accepted. Linking a card to your Disney account enables mobile checkout at many locations.
Safety
Disneyland Resort is a heavily staffed, well-managed environment with a strong safety record. Cast members (resort staff) are present throughout both parks and are trained to assist with a wide range of situations.
For medical emergencies inside the parks, First Aid stations are located in both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure. Their locations are marked on the park map available in the app and at the entrance.
The surrounding Anaheim neighborhoods are generally safe for tourists, though standard urban precautions apply — be aware of your surroundings when walking outside the resort at night, and secure valuables.
For U.S. emergencies, dial 911. The non-emergency Anaheim Police line can be found on the City of Anaheim's official website.
