Henri Coandă International Airport, named after the pioneering Romanian aeronautics engineer, is Romania's largest and busiest international airport, handling over 16 million passengers annually. Located in Otopeni, approximately 16 kilometres north of central Bucharest, it serves as the primary hub for TAROM and a major base for Wizz Air and other carriers. Originally opened in 1970, the airport has undergone significant expansions and modernisations to support Romania's growing role in European aviation.
- Terminal 1 — Handles international Schengen and non-Schengen flights, featuring the majority of retail, dining, and gate facilities.
- Terminal 2 — Primarily serves low-cost carrier traffic and select charter and domestic operations with more streamlined facilities.
- Express Train (CFR Călători) connecting the airport to Gara de Nord in approximately 20 minutes
- Bus line 783 operating between the airport and Piața Unirii in central Bucharest
- Nocturnal bus line N780 providing overnight city connections
- Licensed taxi services from authorised ranks outside arrivals
- Ride-hailing apps including Bolt and Uber available at the airport
- Car rental desks from major international brands located in the arrivals hall
- Radisson Blu Hotel Bucharest (city centre, ~16 km)
- Crowne Plaza Bucharest
- Novotel Bucharest City Centre
- Grand Hotel Bucharest (Intercontinental)
- Airport Hotel Otopeni (close to terminal)
Inside the terminals, travellers will find a range of cafés, fast-food outlets, and sit-down restaurants including international chains and local Romanian options airside. Post-security dining options are more limited in Terminal 2, so arriving early in Terminal 1 is advisable for a wider selection. The Otopeni town area and the road towards Bucharest offer additional restaurants serving traditional Romanian cuisine for those with time before their journey.
- Book the CFR express train ticket in advance or at the station kiosk — it is the fastest and most cost-effective route to central Bucharest.
- Only use clearly marked and licensed taxi stands inside the terminal to avoid unofficial drivers who may overcharge.
- Exchange currency inside the airport only if necessary, as rates at city-centre exchange offices are generally more favourable.
- Allow extra time during summer and holiday periods as passport control queues for non-EU travellers can be lengthy.
